It is commonly
accepted that the Bible is the best-selling book of all
time. What may not be so well know is that in this new
Internet age, the Bibles popularity has continued to grow.
The newest factoid is that the Bible is the best-selling
book every year - year after year.
Back in 2005 a rough estimate set the number of Bibles
sold at around twenty-five million copies. That was just
in the United States! Back then the amount spent on Bibles
sales was estimated to be more than half a billion dollars
per year. The American Bible Society distributed over
60 million Bibles last year in the U.S. alone. The Gideon's
distributed 59,460,000 Bibles worldwide last year. This
is an average of over one million Gideon Bibles every
week, or about 113 per minute. One publisher has 350 different
editions of the Bible in print this season alone.
A recent pole indicated that roughly 92 percent of Americans
own at least one Bible, and the average household has
three. Two-thirds say it holds the answers to the basic
questions of life. This survey also indicated that half
of Americans say they read their Bibles at least once
a month. That represents a great number of Bibles. Bibles
that were purchased somewhere... With the advent of the
Internet and the simplicity of online shopping, traditional
shopping patterns have dramatically changed for the Bible
purchasing public. Google's Trends data reveals that over
the past four years there has been a steady decline in
Internet searches for Bibles but the sales statistics
continue to grow. Why is this so?
Well although there are fewer people searching for Bibles,
they are usually buying Bibles in larger quantities for
Churches and Christian camps and organisations. James
Mindor or House of Worship Bible Supply (http://www.howsupply.com)
says that he has seen a moderate increase in sales over
the past three years but he doesn't doubt that sales are
up overall. "There are just so many more business'
on the Internet selling Bibles and religious literature
that it is getting more and more difficult to retain market
share." Says James Mindor. This Internet driven competition
is also a contributor to the increase in sales of the
Holy Bible. With more and different interpretations being
published every year, owning the latest and greatest version
of the Bible has created a mini fashion revolution in
some religious circles. Adding to this, the ease of buying
Holy Scriptures over the Internet makes traditional Bibles
stores a little more than worried. James Mindor again:
"The fact that HOWSupply.com is an Internet only
business saves everyone time and money. Our customers
can read passages online and even see type face samples
before they buy." This modern access to the Bible
goes far beyond simply seeing type face examples and cover
color choices...
Now anywhere in the world, with an Internet connection
and a credit card, you can now have the Holy Bible delivered
to your door.
